Sewing, Savings & Scraps! A useful "scrappy" project!

Today I made a "draft dodger" for the door that goes between the house and the garage. It has been below zero for several days here in western Wisconsin, and I just couldn't stand the cold draft coming under that door any longer! This will work well to keep the built up heat from summer out also, saving you money on heating and cooling bills!
I used an old pair of flannel pajama bottoms that have seen better days, but the legs were still in great shape. It's filled with plain white rice for weight.

While making this project, I was taken back to my childhood when I came across these bobbins, wound with scraps of several colors of thread. We were brought up to fix things, to save things. We were taught to "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" long before it became the "norm" for most people that it has today! (THANKFULLY!!).  It made me realize the true frugality of people in the past. Several years ago, at an estate sale, I bought a sewing cabinet filled with vintage sewing items. What a treasure hunt that was! Wonderful, useful items. These bobbins were part of that find! Imagine taking the time to wind scraps of thread onto bobbins to save them from going to waste! Some of the pieces aren't more than a foot long. I find them perfect for projects like this one, where the color isn't so important.

This is a very easy project, and should take just a half hour or so.
I used a piece of flannel, cut about 10 inches wide and 40 inches long, from the leg of some old pajamas. You'll want to measure your door, and make the fabric a bit longer than the width of the door.
Sew up the long side using about a half inch seam. Next, sew one of the short ends closed. Turn right side out. Snip a corner off of the bag of rice, and pour the rice into the tube, I used about 6 pounds of rice for this one. You may want to use a wide mouth funnel, or have someone hold the tube open for you.
Pin the short edge, turning it under just a bit so there wouldn't be any raw edges. Hand sew it shut, and you're done!
I hope you enjoy making this project!
Fill with rice.
Hand sew the end shut with a tight overhand stitch.
The finished project!
